How to Calculate IELTS Overall Band Score
Your IELTS Overall Band Score is calculated using your scores in the four IELTS test sections:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
Add the four band scores together and divide the total by 4.
IELTS Score Calculation Example
For example:
- Listening = 8.0
- Reading = 7.5
- Writing = 6.5
- Speaking = 7.0
Step 1: Add all four scores
8.0 + 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0 = 29
Step 2: Divide by 4
29 ÷ 4 = 7.25
Final IELTS Overall Band Score = 7.5
IELTS Band Score Rounding
IELTS Overall Band Scores are reported as whole bands or half bands.
If the average ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band.
If the average ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.

How Is IELTS Listening Score Calculated?
The IELTS Listening test contains 40 questions. You receive one mark for each correct answer.
Your raw score is converted into an IELTS Listening Band Score from Band 0 to Band 9.
How Is IELTS Reading Score Calculated?
The IELTS Reading test also contains 40 questions.
The number of correct answers is converted into a Reading Band Score.
How Is IELTS Writing Score Calculated?
IELTS Writing is assessed using four main criteria:
- Task Achievement / Task Response
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
IELTS Writing contains Task 1 and Task 2. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
How Is IELTS Speaking Score Calculated?
IELTS Speaking is assessed using four criteria:
- Fluency and Coherence

- Pronunciation
